How to Choose the Right Laptop Size for You

Macbook Laptop Computer Technology

A laptop provides several benefits over a traditional desktop computer. They are portable, generally cheaper, take up less space and require much less cords and other accessories to work.

But simply choosing to go with a laptop over a desktop isn’t the only decision you make. You need to choose the right laptop based on other things like RAM, storage type and size, and screen resolution. You also need to choose the right physical laptop size, as well.

But how do you know which size to get? Whether you end up using one of the best 14-inch laptops, or a powerful 17-inch laptop, this article is going to help you reach that decision and assist in choosing the right sized laptop for you.

Know Your Needs

The first step is to evaluate your needs out of the computer. You need to ask yourself what you will be mainly using the laptop for, and this can help you choose the right size to go with. If you are a graphic designer who is generally going to be working in one place, going with a larger laptop with a larger screen is generally the way to go.

These will often have more power, and will be easier to stare and work at for hours. On the other hand, if you simply use the computer for browsing the internet, writing papers and other relatively simple things, a smaller laptop should do. You want a size that allows you to easily read and see everything, without being unnecessarily large.

Do You Require Portability?

One of the main benefits of going with a laptop over a desktop is the portability. You can work at your desk like with a desktop, but can also work in the classroom, on the couch, on the train or at a coffee shop. This gives you a lot more freedom. However, not all laptops are inherently portable.

If you need to lug around a large 17-inch laptop all day, it can get quite tiring. But a small 11-14 inch laptop should be light and easily fit in most bags without an issue. The battery life of smaller laptops is generally better as well. So if you are on the go, a smaller-sized laptop is almost always a better choice to make.

On the other hand, if you don’t require portability, a larger laptop often offers better performance and usability.

What Are Your Port Requirements?

Having the right ports for all of your accessories and peripherals is also something to think about. Many people use a variety of different things with their laptop. This can include a mouse, external speakers, an external hard drive or USB. Each of these will generally need to plug in somewhere, so your computer needs an adequate amount of ports.

If your laptop is lacking ports, you may struggle to find a place for everything, and may have to make some sacrifices. While this isn’t always the case, smaller laptops are generally lighter and thinner, which limits the amount of ports they might have. This may not be an issue if you don’t connect anything to the laptop, but if you do, a larger laptop might be a better choice.

Not every laptop will have the same type or amount of ports, as well. So before you buy any sized laptop, ensure you know how many of each type of port you can expect to find on the device.

In conclusion, we hope the tips and guidelines outlined in this article have been able to help you choose the right sized laptop for your needs.

Thank you for the article! Thanks for the recommendations! “One of the main advantages of using a laptop over a desktop computer is its portability” – and this is the biggest plus of a laptop. For me (I’m a writer), the size of the monitor is very important. The lifespan of monitors can be an issue. On a desktop computer, you simply select the monitor size and replace it with another one. The size of a laptop monitor is limited by the laptop itself, although an external monitor can be connected if you are not on the go.
